Dwight Howard Heading to South Africa For Basketball Without Borders
More news about good deeds from the good guys… Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard, already well-known for his considerable charity, has signed on for Basketball without Borders – the global basketball development program that uses the sport as a backdrop to teach the importance of education, teamwork and healthy living.

The league announced today that Howard will  head to Johannesburg, South Africa, in early September along with Carlos Boozer of the Utah Jazz, Chris Bosh of the Toronto Raptors and Dikembe Mutombo of the Houston Rockets, among others. In all, the NBA will send 10 players and a half-dozen coaches to the program in South Africa, and two other camps will be held as well.

Rockets center Yao Ming will lead Basketball without Borders Asia in Beijing July 30 through Aug. 2, and Basketball without Borders Americas will feature Eduardo Najera of the New Jersey Nets in Mexico City Aug. 6 through Aug. 9.

The top youth players 19 and under from Asia, Latin America and Africa will be selected by the NBA and the International Basketball Federation to train under NBA players and coaches and compete against their peers. The campers are divided into teams without regard to race, religion or nationality – promoting friendship and diversity – and the players also partner with local community groups to lead daily life-skills sessions focusing on education, leadership, character development, health and wellness. They also work with the community on HIV/AIDS awareness, education and grassroots basketball development, and they donate sporting goods and equipment.

This is the first time Howard will have participated in the program, which was started in 2001. And if you think his celebrity will be lost on teenagers in Africa, think again. The NBA is broadcast in 215 countries and territories and in 41 languages.
