Uganda: Country Leads in Phone Growth
Kampala — UGANDA is leading in the growth of mobile cellular subscription in Africa, Houlin Zhoa, the deputy secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union, has said.

"In 2003 the number of fixed phone users was 550,000, while there were 760,000 mobile phone subscribers. Today they are at over nine million," Houlin said. He was speaking at the opening a regional meeting on telecommunications in Africa.

He said Uganda's mobile telephone subscriber growth rate was 30%, surpassing the 27% in the rest of Africa. Houlin urged governments, industries and financial institutions in Africa to make information and communication technology part of the roadmap to development.

Eng. Abel Katuhairwe, the chairperson of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), said Uganda currently had 9.5 million mobile telephone subscribers. "Uganda is leading in the growth of this sector in Africa, but we are second to Kenya in terms of users."

Uganda has five mobile telecommunication companies namely, MTN, Zain, WARID, uganda telecom and Orange. Sami Al Basheer, the director Telecommunication Development Bureau, said Uganda had turned out as the leading in the continent in terms of mobile cellular subscription.

There are currently over 29 million mobile phone subscribers in Africa and Uganda has over nine million of these.
