AFRICA's Population Hits One Billion
The population of Africa has exceeded a billion for the first time. In a report released on Wednesday the UN Population Fund (UNPFA) showed that the number of people on the African continent had doubled in the last 27 years. UNPF Executive Director Thoraya Obeid told the BBC: "Africa countries are all growing fast... because there is large number of women who have no access to planning their families," she said. In its 96-page State of the World Report, the UNPF states that the current world population is approximately 6.8 billion. The report also projects that Africa's population is likely to reach 1.9 billion by 2050.
