Nigeria, Egypt Move Up in FIFA Ranking, As Shehata Inks New Deal

DESPITE Super Eagles unimpressive performance in Angola, Nigeria alongside Egypt now occupied the highest place in Africa in the latest FIFA ranking released yesterday.

However, Spain kept the top spot in world rankings with African Cup of Nations winner, Egypt surging into the top 10.

The United States was unchanged at No. 14, leading the CONCACAF nations. Mexico followed at 17.

European champion Spain is one followed by Brazil and Netherlands. World champion Italy is fourth and Portugal is fifth.

The top nine was unchanged after only N0. 8 Argentina played in the past month, beating Costa Rica 3-2 in a friendly match.

Egypt won its third straight continental title Sunday, lifting it 14 places and knocking Croatia down to N0. 11. Egypt had a previous high ranking of 15th in January 2009.

Nigeria achieved the highest position by an African nation when it ranked fifth in April 1994. It also made the top 10 in 2006.

Nigeria, which reached the African Cup of Nations semi-finals, jumped seven places to N0. 15 and runner-up Ghana climbed seven to N0. 27.

Cameroun fell nine places to N0. 20, and Cote d'voire dropped six to N0. 22 after both lost at the quarter-final stage.

Australia is the top Asian nation at No. 23, a fall of two places, and No. 40 Japan rose three.

New Zealand, the World Cup qualifier from Oceania, climbed three spots to N0. 79.

Meanwhile, record-breaking coach Hassan Shehata has signed a contract extension as head coach of the Pharaohs. His new deal runs until the summer of 2014.

The 60-year-old guided Egypt to their third consecutive African Nations Cup victory last month and is one of the most successful managers in the history of African football.

However, the highly rated coach failed to guide Egypt to the 2010 World Cup after losing the decisive play-off against Algeria 1-0 in Sudan back in November 2009.

Shehata, who was appointed as Egypt's coach in 2004, is determined to help the Pharaohs to the 2014 World Cup though, and the Egyptian Football Association has now handed him the chance to get his revenge.
