Algerian Police Chief Shot Dead By Colleague

The chief of Algeria's national police force has been shot dead by a colleague inside police headquarters on Thursday, law enforcement officials said.

Ali Tounsi, the North African country's director general of national security, was shot Thursday morning at the North African nation's security headquarters in the capital, Algiers, sources told multiple news agencies.

Two other officials were injured during the incident before the attacker, an unidentified police colonel, turned the weapon on himself, an official told The Associated Press.

Tounsi later died in hospital, according to the Algerian daily El Watan.

A judicial inquiry has been opened into the shooting, Algeria's APS national news agency said, adding that the attacker had been seized by a "fit of madness."

Tounsi was credited with his role in the government's fight against Islamic militants affiliated with al-Qaeda, who have been been waging a campaign against the govenrment since the 1990s.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has launched a national reconciliation plan to entice extremists to lay down their arms and reintegrate into society. But sporadic attacks have continued, including the four-day kidnapping of a worker with Canadian engineering company SNC-Lavalin in January.

Algerian media have reported that there was tension between Tounsi and Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni.
