Kenya Upsets Samoa At Commonwwealth Games Rugby Sevens

NEW DELHI  Humphrey Kayange reached over for a last-minute try as Kenya produced a 12-10 upset victory over 2010 world IRB Sevens champions Samoa on Monday to join New Zealand, England and South Africa as unbeaten teams after the first day of the Commonwealth Games tournament.

In the medal quarterfinals Tuesday, New Zealand takes on Wales, South Africa plays Scotland, the Kenyans take on Australia and England plays Samoa.

England, the runnersup at Melbourne four years ago, beat Australia 21-19 to clinch first place in Pool D when the Australians missed the conversion of a try scored after the full-time siren had sounded.

New Zealand had lopsided wins over Canada 43-7, Guyana 52-0 and Scotland 46-0.

"We got the key things right," said New Zealand's D. J. Forbes. "We relied on a few guys to make key breaks. The beauty of the team is its real depth."

Forbes said the Kiwis will not be taking Wales lightly.

"We actually had a training match against them in Dubai," he said. "Hopefully the boys will step up."

Generally, it was a case of the haves over the have-nots, with many lopsided scores Monday. Guyana failed to score a point in three matches and conceded 125. Host India lost all three matches.

Nine of the world's 12 highest-ranked sevens teams are competing among the 16 teams in New Delhi.

"It's an awesome feeling, it's such a massive event," England's Daniel Norton said after his team's 55-0 win over Uganda.

Missing from the tournament is Fiji, which has been suspended by the Commonwealth for political reasons and was ineligible to compete.

Rugby sevens will be on the Olympic program for the 2016 Rio Games
