First Fishing Port in Guinea Bissau Inaugurated

Bissau, Guinea Bissau, 15 Sept – The government of Guinea Bissau Wednesday inaugurated the country’s first fishing port, a facility that was built from scratch making use of funds of around 10 million euros from the African Development Bank (ADB).

The new fishing port has capacity to dock four large ships and also has a market, refrigeration facilities, a laboratory and areas for private businesspeople that want to invest in the fishing sector.

The prime minister of Guinea Bissau, Carlos Gomes Júnior, said at the inauguration that the new commercial fishing port, as well as having, “excellent working and hygiene conditions,” would make it possible for “large trawlers” to anchor in Guinea Bissau, from where they can export the country’s fish.

“We hope that soon the European Union will grant Guinea Bissau with its fishing hygiene certificate so that we can start exporting to the European market,” the Prime Minister added.

The representative of the African Development Bank in Guinea Bissau, Ansumane Mané, said that the new port provided the country with “better conditions” to negotiate with its partners in the sector.

One of the requirements of the EU, which one of Guinea Bissau’s main partners in the fishing sector, is that the country have a laboratory that can certify the hygiene of the fishing products in order for them to be exported to the European market.
