South Africa's Springboks Beats England 36-27
South Africa defeated England despite a stirring second half fight back by the English men in the second Test. Wing JP Pietersen helped South Africa win 36-27 at Ellis Park.
South Africa dominated the first half and had stretched their lead to 28-10 after 47 minutes before England clawed their way back to 31-27 with 15 minutes remaining.
The defeat was England’s ninth in succession to South Africa and it was always likely to be a tall order given the altitude of the Highveld and because the limited preparation evident in South Africa’s performance the previous week was no longer a factor.
But while there was an element of controversy over both of South Africa’s first two tries in the opening eight minutes, England’s start was a dismal and ultimately costly one.
South Africa led 22-3 after the first quarter and England showed their character through two tries by scrumhalf Ben Youngs and one by first five Toby Flood, who also scored three conversions and two penalties in a faultless goal kicking display. But the single moment of magic of Pietersen denied England from pulling off a comeback victory.
