Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela; 26 September 1936 – 2 April 2018) 81 years old.
South African anti-apartheid activist and politician Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died. She was born on 26 September 1936 she was 81 years old. She was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) party, she served on the ANC's National Executive Committee and headed its Women's League.
She was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years, including 27 years during which he was imprisoned. Although they were still married at the time of his becoming president of South Africa in May 1994, the couple had separated two years earlier.
Their divorce was finalized on 19 March 1996.
A controversial activist she remained popular among her supporters, who referred to her as the "Mother of the Nation". She met lawyer and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela in 1957. They married in 1958 and had two daughters, Ezinhle (born 1959) and Zindzi (born 1960). Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1963 and released in 1990. The couple separated in 1992 and finalized the divorce in 1996 with an unspecified out-of-court settlement.
