The Tale Of The Clouds & The Nile: Nile Project’s Nile Choir Set To Take The Stage For The First Time

The Nile Choir’s first-ever performance at will take place at the Falaki Theatre on the 28th of May at 8pm!  The Nile Choir is the Nile Project’s Cairo-based community music program. Founded on the pillars of co-creation & cross-cultural collaboration, the eclectic ensemble brings together musicians from the 11 countries of the Nile Basin to perform an operetta that evokes the Nile River as a shared ecosystem.  The Tale of the Clouds & the Nile tells the story of legendary creatures that live on the banks of the Nile River, brought together by extraordinary circumstances and a harsh drought. The fable was written and composed by the Choir members as a collective; artfully combining the languages, instruments, and rhythms of the countries that share the Nile River to create an epic, unified sound.

The operetta will take the audience on a journey that spans 4,132 miles and explores the diverse cultures and sounds of a river that touches the lives of 437 million people.  'The Nile Choir is a lovely, diverse group of people who, over the course of two months, were able to create a small community. They were able to interact smoothly and in harmony, and they were able to produce one product that relates to them all, although they have different opinions and approaches.' – Salam Yousry, Nile Choir Workshop Director.  The choir features beginners, amateur musicians, and professionals alike, brought together by their desire to make music, make new friends, learn more about the Nile Basin, and address the collective challenges of a more sustainable Nile River.

By amplifying multiple Nile narratives and voices through song, the Nile Choir creates a safe space for dialogue and meaningful cooperation within Egypt among communities that normally don’t interact with one another. The Nile Choir performance will showcase music as a model for peaceful and productive coexistence between different communities; a source of inspiration for cross-cultural empathy; and an example for the potential of trans-boundary cooperation.

ABOUT THE NILE PROJECT: The Nile Project was founded in 2011 to address the Nile Basin’s cultural and environmental challenges. Using music, education, and innovation programs, the Nile Project inspires, informs, and empowers university students to work together to foster the sustainability of their ecosystem. The Nile Project curates collaborations among musicians from the 11 Nile countries to expose audiences to the cultures of their river neighbours. These musical experiences foster cross-cultural empathy and inspire environmental curiosity to shift the Nile from a divisive geopolitical argument to a uniting East African conversation.
