Confederation Of African Football (CAF) Has a New Boss; "Madagascar FA Chief Ahmad"

Ahmad of Madagascar is the new President of The Confederation of African Football (CAF) . He pulled off a stunning upset on Thursday, by ousting long-term CAF President Issa Hayatou in the CAF elections at the organisation’s congress in Ethiopia. Hayatou had been in chrage for 29 years. He is also a senior vice-president of Fifa. He lost by 34 votes to 20 in a ballot of the Confederation of African Football's 54 member countries.
Hayatou left the congress room when the result was announced without commenting. He has been credited with increasing the number of African teams at the World Cup and bringing in extra finance for the continent’s competitions.
.
"This is sweet victory," said Ahmad, a government minister from the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar and the Madagascan football federation head. "When you work hard for years and months and you succeed, that is great." Ahmad, who became Madagascar FA chief in 2003, takes over as CAF President on an initial four-year term. He has promised to modernise CAF and make it more transparent.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino who was present during the election has recently invited speculation that he was backing Ahmad. Hayatou supported one of Infantino's opponents in the FIFA presidential election last year. Ahmad becomes a FIFA VP as head of the African confederation. Hayatou has been member of FIFA's top brass since 1990.

Hayatou stood in as acting FIFA president in the wake of the 2015 scandal, had reigned supreme over CAF for three decades, and had only been challenged twice before for re-election. Both those times he won by a landslide and hadn't faced a challenger for over a decade.
