Johannesburg, South Africa, 20 November 2020: Afro-visuals Director, Makere Thekiso, has been selected to screen his short films, Unknown Union and Hearts And Times at the Africa Rising International Film Festival 2020, taking place from Friday, 27 November – Sunday, 29 November 2020.

“To be selected to showcase at any film festival that recognises film-makers whose work reflect true stories from the continent is something we are proud of, as a team,” says Makere Thekiso. “I’m a storyteller by profession and my medium of choice is moving pictures. I want to create rich, longer formatted pieces that celebrate and redefine the African narrative and Diaspora. Films that will withstand time, cultural boundaries and transcend borders.”

Makere is redefining how audiences experience the rich and diverse cultural tapestries on the continent, carving out a signature cinematography and style, in abstract films now commanding the attention of international film festivals. The films are a celebration of art, culture, space, intricate aesthetics, detailing stories of everyday expressions and challenges.

In 2020 alone, two Makere Thekiso short films, Unknown Union featuring Afro-Soul artist Berita; and Hearts And Times featuring rapper, M.anifest and Naafia Naah received several international festival selections and nominations. With Unknown Union bagging the Best Hair award at the 2020 Bokeh SA International Lifestyle & Fashion Film Festival, in August 2020.
