Man Survives Train Collision

Patricia Maganu. Francistown — A 61 year old man from Mosweu ward in Sefhophe escaped death by inches after his car collided with a train in Francistown over the weekend. Mongwewarona Monnathune is said to have tried to manoeuvre his vehicle crossing the railway when he met with the train and he has since been charged with driving without due care and attention. Monnathune, an employee of Builders Material Supplies (BMS), was driving a company vehicle, a Nissan CABSTAR when the incident took place. Assistant Superintendent, Bonno Mabetha of Kutlwano Police says that they charged him because the boom gates were closed to show that the train was still moving.

"When those lights are on and the boom gates are closed, it clearly shows that it is still not safe to cross," he said. Mabetha says that all the driver had to do was to remain patient. Mabetha said the incident took place around 7:30 pm last Friday night. He says what the police gathered is that the train was coming from the south side minutes before the incident occurred. "The train had been moving but it stopped along Martin Luther King Junior Street and the gates were closed but another vehicle manoeuvred and managed to get through but instead of Monnathune waiting he went ahead and tried to manoeuvre his vehicle also and that is when he met with the train," he said. Matheba said that it was too late for him to cross. "The train pushed the head of the car and the chase," he said. Mabetha said that Monnathune escaped with minor injuries because the train driver acted quickly. He said that the vehicle is the one that suffered the most. Mabetha says that the investigations are complete and Monnathune has admitted guilt for the charge of driving without due care and attention
