South Africa's Caster Semenya Wins 800 Olympic Title at Rio Olympics

South African Caster Semenya, world champion in 800 meters in 2009, ran in 1:55.28 to become the Olympic champion with gold in Rio, as controversy still simmers over her condition of hyperandrogenism.


Burundian Francine Niyonsaba came in next with a time of 1:56.49 and Kenyan Margaret Wambui reached the podium in 1:56.89, also a personal record.
Unbeaten in eight races this year, Semenya - silver in London 2012, after the Russian Mariya Savinova - came to Rio with the African title and world's best in 10 years: 1:55.33, achieved in Monaco.
Burundi's Francina Niyonsaba, world champion in indoor track, and Kenyan Margaret Wambui, bronze winner in 2016 and world champion under-20 two years agowas third.
