Kenyans Geoffrey Kirui And Edna Kiplagat Win At The 2017 Boston Marathon

Kenya’s Geoffrey Kirui pulled away from American Galen Rupp in the 24th mile of the race, running a 4:27 mile, to win his first Boston Marathon in 2:09:37. Rupp finished second in 2:09:58 and Suguru Osako was third (2:10:28). This was Kirui’s first marathon victory ever. American Rupp, a three time Olympian was making his Boston debut.

In the women's race Edna Kiplagat of Kenya who’s also a Kenyan police officer, won the women’s race with a time of 2:21:52. Edna won the New York City and London marathons in 2010. Rose Chelimo of Bahrain finished second (2:22:51) and American Jordan Hasay finished third in her marathon debut in 2:23:00. Kiplagat opened up a big lead heading into the dreaded Newton hills which she maintained up to the finish.
