The Greatest Footballer Ever, Brazilian Superstar "Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele)" has died at the age of 82.

Brazil's Football Super Star Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as "Pelé", the King of Football/Soccer, regarded as the greatest footballer to have ever lived has passed away at the age of 82 at a hospital in Brazil after a long battle with cancer. He had been undergoing treatment for colon cancer.

Pele was known all over the World for his football exploits in the pre-internet and pre-social media eras. In the 1960s, he was widely believed to be the most famous person on earth. In 1999, he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Commitee(IOC) .

Pele is also the only man to have won the FIFA World Cup "three times", an amazing achievement.

Declared a national treasure in Brazil, Pele was widely regarded as the most successful and popular sports figure of the 20th century.  Pele was a special talent averaging almost a goal per game throughout his career, Pelé could strike the football with both his left or right foot in addition to anticipating his opponents' movements on the field.

Pelé began playing for Brazilian Football Club Santos at the age of 15 and the Brazillian national team at 16. During his international career, he won three  FIFA World Cups: 1958, 1962 and 1970. He is the only player to do so. He was nicknamed O Rei (The King) following the 1958 tournament.

Pelé is the joint top goalscorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games. At the club level, he was Santos' alltime top goal scorer with 643 goals in 659 games. Pele led Santos to the 1962 and 1963 Copa Libertadores, and to the 1962 and 1963 Intercontinental Cup.

During his playing days, Pelé was for a period the best-paid athlete in the world. After retiring in 1977, Pelé became a worldwide ambassador for football and made many acting and commercial ventures. Pelé's "electrifying play and penchant for scoring spectacular goals" made him famous around the world.
