Cherono of Kenya Wins Honolulu Marathon, Shattering Course Record

Lawrence Cherono of Kenya won the 44th Honolulu Marathon with a course record-breaking time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 39 seconds Sunday.

Brigid Kosgei, also of Kenya, won the women’s race in a non-record 2:31:11. Lindsey Scherf, an American who trains in Singapore, was second in 2:34:05.

The previous men’s record of 2:11:12 was set by Jimmy Muindi in 2004.

Wilson Chebet, also of Kenya and the 2014 Honolulu champion, repeated his second place finish of 2015. He led much of this year’s race and also broke Muindi’s record, but finished more than a minute behind Cherono in 2:10:50.

Cherono, running in Honolulu for the first time, said the weather was “conducive” to a record.

Deribe Roba and 2016 Olympics silver medalist Feyisa Lelisa, both of Ethiopia, were third and fourth, respectively, in 2:13:40 and 2:15:57.

Masazumi Soejima of Japan won the men’s wheelchair race for the fourth consecutive time, crossing in 1:35:35. Wakako Tsuchida, also from Japan, was the first woman in the wheelchair division, finishing in 1:50:42.

The 26.2-mile race continued through mid-morning, with most of around 21,000 people starting it at 5 a.m. still making their way to the Kapiolani Park finish.
