Weru began his sports career in rugby union, where he was recognized for his explosive ball-carrying abilities. Coming from a rugby background, he will join fellow IPP alum, Uar Bernard on the Philadelphia Eagles, and will currently be the lone Kenyan in the NFL, paving the way for others.
National Teams: He represented Kenya at both the U20 level and with the senior national team, the Kenya Simbas. He notably scored a 60-meter try against the USA during the 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifiers.
Club Level: He joined the Northampton Saints Academy at age 14 and signed a professional contract with the senior academy in 2022. He also had a brief stint with the French club US Dax.
Transition to the NFL
Weru's physical traits—standing 6'4" and weighing roughly 245 lbs—made him an ideal candidate for the NFL International Player Pathway (IPP) program class of 2026.
Metric Measurement
40-Yard Dash 4.45 seconds
Vertical Jump 41 inches
Broad Jump 11'2"
10-Yard Split 1.59 seconds
His testing numbers were compared to top college prospects like Sonny Styles, particularly his elite 10-yard split, which is a key indicator for his new projected position as a defensive end/edge rusher.
After going unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft, he was quickly picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles, a team known for developing international talent like Jordan Mailata.
