HOMA BAY, Kenya — A Linda Mwananchi opposition rally in Homa Bay County descended into chaos on Sunday, August 16, 2026, leaving two people dead, dozens injured, and extensive destruction of property after violent clashes broke out along the campaign route.
The grassroots mobilization tour, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, encountered roadblocks and violent resistance shortly after entering the county from Nyandiwa. What began as a political rally quickly escalated into running battles involving stone-throwing, barricades, and confrontations between protesters and security officers.
The violence claimed two lives under separate circumstances. Along the Homa Bay–Kendu Bay Road between Olare and Nyangweso in Rangwe Sub-county, a police driver attached to the Muhoroni Police Division was struck in the head by a stone allegedly thrown by youths while transporting senior officers back to their station. The impact caused him to lose control of the vehicle, which veered into a ditch. He later died while being rushed to a referral hospital in Kisumu.
The second fatality occurred in Homa Bay town, where a woman identified by authorities as a Ugandan national was run over during a stampede that erupted after police fired tear gas to disperse crowds amid intense stone-throwing.
The clashes left between 46 and 54 people injured, including at least eight police officers. Victims suffered gunshot wounds, machete cuts, fractures, and other serious injuries. Rescue efforts were complicated by an ongoing healthcare workers' strike in the region, forcing emergency responders to transfer critically injured patients to private health facilities and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for specialized treatment.
Violence spread across several key roads as armed groups erected barricades using boulders, logs, and burning tyres along the Lala–Junction Kodoyo–Oyugis route, disrupting movement and trapping vehicles. At least seven vehicles, including media cars and a sound truck linked to Bungoma Governor George Natembeya, were torched or vandalized during the unrest.
Journalists covering the rally were also targeted. The Media Council of Kenya confirmed that at least eight reporters from Mediamax, Royal Media Services, and Standard Group were assaulted, with cameras and other equipment either destroyed or stolen. The unrest also extended to the Seventh-day Adventist Church Lake Victoria Field headquarters in Lala, where buildings and parked vehicles were vandalized.
Following the violence, Linda Mwananchi leaders issued a joint statement describing the attacks as a premeditated ambush carried out by hired groups allegedly working with rogue security officers. Local administrators, however, attributed the clashes to confrontations between rival political supporters.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem confirmed that several suspects had been arrested and crude weapons recovered during ongoing security operations. Investigations are continuing as authorities seek to identify those responsible for planning and executing the violence.
