First in Africa, Botswana welcomes the world with a sparkle this May 2–3, 2026 in Gaborone. The Medals were designed by a Motswana, Thabang Maphanyane from The Dialogue Group. At the centre is a natural diamond, a symbol of the journey Botswana has taken over the past 60 years, and the resilience and opportunity we continue to build. These are also the first medals in the history of the World Athletics Relays to feature an embedded diamond. The design draws from the Mohembo Bridge, representing connection and movement, much like the spirit of athletics, bringing nations and people together. Encircling this is the zebra pattern, a reflection of our identity, unity in diversity, rhythm, and strength.

As we prepare to host the first World Athletics Relays on African soil, these medals will carry our story with every athlete who competes for them. The medals and casing are courtesy of the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, through the Okavango Diamond Company and the Diamond Marketing Committee. Botswana ready to receive the world.
