LUANDA / NAIROBI — Kenyan tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi is set to make history at the inaugural Angola Ladies Open, where she will compete in her first-ever main draw match on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour.
The tournament, a WTA 125 event, is being held at the Kikuxi Tennis Academy in Luanda, Angola, from November 2–8, marking the first time Angola has hosted a WTA-sanctioned competition.
The event serves as a crucial pathway between the ITF World Tennis Tour and the top levels of professional tennis, attracting some of the continent’s emerging talents alongside established international players. The tournament features a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles competition, with a total prize purse of US$115,000.
Okutoyi Faces Tough Opening Test in Singles Draw
Okutoyi begins her singles campaign against Russian eighth seed Sofya Lansere in the opening round.
Lansere, ranked around the top 300 in the world, enters the contest with significant experience on the ITF and WTA Challenger circuits, making her a demanding first opponent for the Kenyan star.
Okutoyi, currently ranked in the top 430 of the WTA singles rankings, enters the tournament after a strong season that saw her reach multiple ITF finals and continue her steady climb through the professional ranks.
The match represents another important step in the career of the 22-year-old, who has become one of Africa’s most promising tennis players after breaking through at junior and collegiate levels.
Doubles Partnership With Nahimana
Beyond the singles competition, Okutoyi will also compete in the doubles draw alongside longtime partner Sada Nahimana of Burundi.
The East African pair have developed a strong partnership on the professional circuit, winning several ITF doubles titles, including victories at W25 and W35 tournaments in Nairobi.
Okutoyi enters the doubles competition as one of Africa’s leading doubles players, having reached a career-high doubles ranking of No. 174 following impressive performances at various professional events.
A New Chapter for Kenyan Tennis
The Angola Ladies Open marks another milestone in Okutoyi’s rapid rise from junior champion to professional tennis player.
The Kenyan star previously made history as the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title after claiming the 2022 Wimbledon Girls’ Doubles Championship. She later continued her development during her collegiate career at Auburn University, where she won the 2024 NCAA National Doubles Championship.
Since turning professional, Okutoyi has collected multiple ITF titles in both singles and doubles, establishing herself as a leading figure in African tennis.
Her appearance in Luanda is not only a personal achievement but also a landmark moment for Kenya, as she continues to expand the country’s presence in international tennis.
