The Government of the Republic of Djibouti and the World Bank @WorldBankMENA are continuing the modernization of the Djibouti-Addis Ababa economic corridor through an additional 45 million USD in funding approved on June 18, 2026.
This new contribution adds to the 7O million USD mobilized in 2021 and the 90 million USD pproved in 2024, bringing the World Bank's total support to 205 million USD. This funding will enable the continuation of the expansion of RN1 between Arta and Doudoubalala, particularly on sections with a high risk of accidents, through the construction of 2x2 separated-lane roadways.
It will also contribute to the modernization of the Doudoubalala-Guélilé section, the strengthening of the infrastructure's resilience against flooding and extreme heat, as well as improvements to road safety across the entire corridor.
The project further plans for the construction of modern rest areas in Doudoubalala, the establishment of two new weigh stations, and the enhancement of the capacities of institutions responsible for road safety. These investments aim to improve transport fluidity, preserve the national road heritage, and reinforce the strategic role of RN1, the main artery for trade between Djibouti and Ethiopia.
